Dear friends,
My name is Martin Nickolay-Blake and I am involved in the ongoing Trafalgar Square Anti Cuts Occupation. We’ve so far had three successful (smallish but growing) peaceful 24 hour occupations of Trafalgar Square with the next one due this Saturday – http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=138700842869049.
The aims of the occupation are to:
Raise awareness of the ideological cuts that the Government is instigating – without mandate – and how they are affecting the most vulnerable in society. Creating a safe space for all, including parents and children, where alternatives to current policy can be learned about and discussed, with workshops, talks, debates and creative art.
Defend the right to peaceful protest. The group intends to show that without police presence, protesters can organise themselves peacefully and lawfully. This has already been successfully demonstrated on previous occupations, when the police stayed at a distance and there was no conflict. If there are attempts to remove participants, they will resist non-violently through passive resistance. The group refuses to use violence when it is violence done to our society that it is trying to resist.
So far been a great experience interaction with the public through art and workshops. But we want to do more. We aren’t just students; we are workers and people from many different backgrounds, with a multitude of different motivations, united in their opposition to government policy. We think that for this occupation to be effective, and for it to be able to achieve goals beyond it’s current aims, it has to grow, and to do so with the help of and building of alliances with organisations who may not usually be involved with such actions. This is why I have contacted you. Groups of individuals engaged in group actions like ours need the help and support of structured, formal organisations like the unions if we are to succeed. Any messages of solidarity you could send would give us a boost, but even better would be representatives and speakers would be even better. Additionally, it is probable that we will have a presence in the Square on May Day, and would like your support in this. We see the day as the most important since March 26th, and hope to emphasise the continuity between that action and May Day, and an excellent opportunity to build unity between the different sections and groups involved in opposition to the government. We would very much appreciate union endorsement generally, but particularly in this.
